Doubles tandem off to state

LAKE GENEVA - Monroe's No. 1 doubles team of Kelsey Erickson and Brooke McBain earned a trip to state at Wednesday's WIAA Division 1 Lake Geneva Badger Sectional.

Erickson and McBain knocked off Milton's Brooke Negus and Megan Burandt 7-5, 6-0 to earn the trip. The pair then lost to Janesville Craig's Maggie Bolton and Taylor Storbakken 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. In the third place match, the duo knocked off Madison East's Anna Spiekerman and Maggie Doublas 6-2, 6-2.

The Cheesemakers also got second-place finishes from juniors Ellie Shuda (No. 2 singles) and Lily Priewe (No. 3 singles).

Shuda defeated Madison East's Heidi Thiel 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-1 in the opener, but lost to Rebecca Mixtacki of Madison La Follette (6-2, 6-4).

Priewe knocked off Sun Prairie's Marta Sandgren 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals before losing to Janesville Parker's Becky Harmata 6-3, 6-3 in the finals.

Monroe's top singles player, senior Kristin McArdle, lost in the first round to Madison La Follette's Renee Nelson 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. McArdle qualified for state in 2009.
