MONROE - The Cheesemaker boys tennis team finished last in the Monroe Doubles tournament Saturday.

Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said the finish was disappointing.

"To have success at a tournament you have to get nearly all of your flights through the first round, win close matches, and get some entries into the championship match," Saugstad said. "Unfortunately we only got two out of our five flights through the first round."

McFarland won championships at four of the five flights en route to winning the team title 24-17 over Sauk Prairie. Monona Grove took third (13) just ahead of fourth-place Stoughton.

"The most disappointing part for us as a team was that three teams we have beaten finished ahead of us," Saugstad said.

The Cheesemakers lost all four of the three set matches they played. The highlights for the Cheesemakers were the No. 1A doubles team of David Shon and Matt Monahan and the No. 1 doubles team of senior Mark Jenson and junior Kevin Noriega, who each finished in third place. The only other top six finishes for the Cheesemakers came from the No. 3 doubles team of Jeremy Miller and Silas Setterstrom (sixth) and the No. 4 doubles team of Nick Hendrickson and Keyton Friske (sixth).

Shon and Monahan, the Cheesemakers' top two singles players, teamed up at No. 1A doubles to go 2-1. Shon and Monahan defeated Baraboo's T.J. Laux and Ian Krsjzaniek 6-3, 6-3. In a semifinal match, McFarland's Joey Kopp and Tim Vallon defeated the Cheesemakers' duo 6-2, 6-4. Both of McFarland's players had state tournament experience last year. Shon and Monahan bounced back, cruising past Sauk Prairie's Ben Kraus and Jarrett Frosch 6-0, 6-1 in a third-place match.

"Matt and David were barely missing any shots against Sauk Prairie's normal No. 1 doubles team," Saugstad said.

Jenson and Noriega at No. 1 doubles opened the tournament by knocking off Fort Atkinson's Owen Kirkeby and Jack Chisholm 6-2, 6-3. The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles duo went 2-1 in the tournament and improved their record to 10-6 this season. McFarland's Adam Cook and Sam Divita defeated Jenson and Noriega in the semifinals 6-3, 6-2.

"Mark and Kevin had the match that I hoped they would get against McFarland," Saugstad said. "McFarland's guys went to state last year and I wanted to see how Kevin and Mark would match up against them. We couldn't quite hang with McFarland. They don't hit amazing shots, but they consistently put their shots where they need to go and we couldn't do the same."

In a third-place match, the Cheesemaker duo beat Monona Grove's Alex McDade and Nick Rice 6-3, 7-6 (5).

"The second set was very close and Mark and Kevin hit some really strong shots to finish off the tiebreak," Saugstad said.
