MONROE - The Monroe girls tennis team smashed DeForest 6-1 in dominating fashion in a dual match Thursday.

"I think we are realizing even though we lost so many players from last year, we will still be contenders in the Badger South," said Stephanie Miller, Monroe's coach, after the Cheesemakers beat the Norskies in a Badger crossover match.

The Cheesemakers swept all four singles matches. Monroe senior Kristin McArdle at No. 1 singles defeated DeForest's Mira Deming 6-0, 6-1. Junior Ellie Shuda at No. 2 singles defeated Hannah Aime 6-3, 6-0. Fellow junior Lily Priewe at No. 3 singles beat Abby Smallwood 6-2, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, senior Alyssa Quinn defeated MacKenzie Spurgat 6-0, 6-1.

The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team of senior Kelsey Erickson and junior Brooke McBain cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over DeForest's Robin Sevedge and Leah Suchomeliz 6-0, 6-1.

Senior Elisabeth Brunner and freshman Ellie Grossen at No. 3 doubles defeated Anna Ihland and Amy Sommers 6-4, 6-4. Monroe seniors Becca Flannery and Rachel Thompson lost a hard-fought three-set match 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-2.

The victory for the Cheesemakers came on the heels of a 4-3 loss to Badger North rival Waunakee.

"I think the girls stepped up and played well," Miller said. "I think any of the matches we play at singles or doubles are up for grabs against any opponent. I think the girls are learning what it takes to win."
