BRODHEAD - East Troy junior Breanna Gaspervich, who stands 5 feet, 5 inches, has the uncanny ability at getting to the basket and making unconventional floating layups look easy.

Brodhead found out about Gaspervich's knack for making clutch shots Tuesday night.

Gaspervich scored a game-high 31 points to lead seventh ranked East Troy to a 62-55 win over Brodhead, which is ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press Division 3 state poll.

Gaspervich made three of the Trojans' seven 3-pointers and had six steals as East Troy improved to 10-1 overall and 5-1 in the Rock Valley North.

"Breanna has an incredibly quick first step," East Troy coach Jeff Brown said. "She has a knack for finding gaps and scoring. This was a nice win for us because Brodhead is a really good team."

Brodhead sophomore Carly Mohns finished with 24 points and 15 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end, and three blocked shots. With the loss, Brodhead drops to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the Rock Valley South since the crossover games against Rock Valley North teams count in the standings.

"We knew it was going to be a big game," Mohns said. "We gave them a couple of extra opportunities and against good teams you can't do that."

The Cardinals had a size advantage and a big rebounding edge with the 6-1 Mohns, but the Trojans' 2-3 trapping zone forced 18 turnovers.

"We always talk about rebounding because we are such a small team," Brown said. "The Mohns kid ... oh my Gosh. I have two more years of her and then I may retire."

Brodhead coach Bard Pickett understands the Cardinals can take something away from their first conference loss in a tournament-type atmosphere.

"We had a chance," Pickett said. "You play good teams and you learn from them."

Gaspervich scored 11 points as the Trojans jumped out to a 11-5 first-quarter lead.

Brodhead sophomore Meg Duffield drilled a 3-pointer about midway through the first period to cut the Trojans' lead to 11-10. East Troy junior Alicia Oleson hit back-to-back jumpers at the end of the first quarter to give the Trojans a 17-12 lead.

The Cardinals dominated most of the third quarter, going on a 12-5 run. Mohns erupted for 10 points during the spurt. She knocked down a jumper and scored down low on an inbound play on back-to-back possessions midway through the third quarter to give the Cardinals a 43-39 lead.

"I think we started communicating better and picked up our intensity a little bit," Mohns said.

The Cardinals committed two costly traveling violations in the final 1:08 of the period. East Troy junior Rachel Actchison hit a 3-pointer and Oleson scored down low to give the Trojans a 46-43 lead entering the fourth quarter.

"That was definitely a momentum swing," Pickett said. "You have to give credit to East Troy. They did a nice job of forcing turnovers and they got out and pushed the ball."

Gaspervich came up with a steal and scored on a layup, then knocked down a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter to give the Trojans a 54-45 lead. East Troy led by as many as 13 points in the fourth quarter.

"I think we panicked a little bit in the fourth quarter and they extended their lead," Pickett said. "Maybe we get to see them down the road and we will be ready for them."

Brodhead shot just 12 of 24 from the free throw line. Sophomore Rachel Heller and junior Taylor Douglas each added seven points.

It doesn't get any easier for the Cardinals. Brodhead plays at Whitewater, which is ranked No. 8 in Division 2, on Friday and then will play Monday at Clinton, which it leads by one game in the Rock Valley South.

"We can't get down," Mohns said. "We just have to come back after this game."
