BARNEVELD - Monticello sophomore Sam DeVoe took a changeup and belted it for a double off Barneveld's Kristen Udelhofen, giving the Ponies a thrilling 1-0 win over the Eagles in the ninth inning Monday, April 29.
Monticello sophomore Alyssa Kubly led off the ninth with a single. Junior Marissa Berg laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Kubly into scoring position. DeVoe then delivered a game-winning hit that helped the Ponies (9-3, 3-1 Six Rivers East) avenge a loss to Barneveld from a week ago.
"It was nice, considering that is how they beat us at our place," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said. "I told the girls we were going to play some small ball. We laid down four sacrifice bunts and we had the one big hit."
Udelhofen pitched nine innings and gave up one run on five hits to the Ponies. She struck out eight and walked one. Monticello's Claire Bruns was equally up to the challenge. She pitched a four-hit shutout in nine innings. She struck out four and walked one.
"(Bruns) threw probably her best game of the year," Garrison said.
Kubly went 2-for-4 to lead the Ponies. The other hits for Monticello came from Jordan Garrison and Courtney Leuzinger.
