EVANSVILLE - Coach Brian Jensen's Monroe boys golf team has shown a penchant for improving every time it plays an 18-hole round this season.

That trend continued in major fashion Tuesday afternoon, when Monroe obliterated an earlier score at Evansville Golf Club en route to finishing third in a Division 2 regional tournament.

The top-four finish sends Monroe to sectionals next Tuesday at Trappers Turn Golf Club in Wisconsin Dells.

Jensen said prior to the season that the Cheesemakers would enjoy much better depth in 2012 and his lineup was rock-solid in the regional, carding a 337 to finish behind only Madison Edgewood and Edgerton, both at 318, in the 10-team tournament. Big Foot was fourth at 343 and Brodhead was eighth at 368.

Monroe carded a 354 at Evansville GC in late April, but improvement throughout the lineup showed in a big way at the regional.

"We have a lot more depth than we have the past few years and all the guys have been able to contribute," Jensen said. "To get to this point is definitely a positive for the program going forward."

Senior Kyle Bruce fired a 76 to tie for second place behind Edgerton's Andrew Morrison, who earned medalist honors with a 75.

Junior Caleb Pagel (83), senior Jason Atkinson (89), freshman Matt Miller (89) and sophomore Eric Timm (93) rounded out Monroe's scoring.

Bruce's 76 included bogeys on his last three holes, Jensen said.

"Kyle had a great round," Jensen said. "He's definitely playing well right now."

Pagel's 83 was his best 18-hole round of the season, which Jensen said was "definitely surprising."

"He has been capable of shooting those scores all year," Jensen said of Pagel. "(Evansville GC) is a difficult golf course to score on and he hasn't been putting the best, but he putted great today. His ball-striking was as good as I've seen it all year.

"He's had some ups and downs this year but he definitely put it together for regionals."

Atkinson's 89 included a rough 48 on his first nine before he finished with a 41 - his best nine-hole stretch of the spring.

Atkinson's rally "helped ensure the move on to sectionals," Jensen said. "I was definitely pleasantly surprised with how he finished up."
