FORT ATKINSON - Monroe senior pitcher Mike Demianiuk pitched all seven innings Tuesday, leading the Cheesemakers to a 4-3 baseball win over conference newcomer Fort Atkinson.
"Mike was in control again," head coach Steve Christensen said. "We made it hard by not getting to some bloopers, but Mike continued to battle and again didn't walk a batter."
Demianiuk's RBI-single in the first inning and Kris Reider's sacrifice fly in the fourth had Monroe up 2-1.
After the Blackhawks tied the score in the top of the fifth, the Cheesemakers struck twice in the bottom of the inning on another single by Demianiuk and Cory Kundert's sacrifice fly.
A couple of bloop hits lead to a Fort Atkinson run in the top of the seventh, but Demianiuk closed the door after that.
Demianiuk finished with five strikeouts and eight hits, while going 3-for-4 with two RBIs at the plate.
Alex Dammen was 2-for-2 and Mitch Marty, Taylor Weckerly, Matt Whipple, Reider and Kundert each had a hit. Scott Kline had two sacrifice bunts.
"Taylor Weckerly saved a couple of errors with good glove work at first. Offensively, we cut our strikeouts down," Christensen said. Monroe had just three strikeout.
Monroe (2-3, 2-0 Badger South) has won its first two conference games and faces Madison Edgewood on Thursday.
