WAUNAKEE - The Cheesemakers showed up a quarter late and that made all the difference in Friday night's 54-44 loss at Badger North champion Waunakee.
The Warriors outworked Monroe to the tune of a 15-5 opening frame and, while the Cheesemakers battled back to get within six several times, they never quite completely closed the gap.
"We've just gotta be able to have that switch on for all four quarters," Monroe coach Kevin Keen said. "We need to find the intensity we had in the second quarter at the very start of the game."
Melanie Walker dropped in 15 points to lead Waunakee, which sprung on numerous early miscues.
"We didn't take care of the ball and turned it over," Keen said, "and you can't do it when it's one and done from here on out."
Monroe's sophomore point guard, Gwen Sutter, scored seven of her team-high 12 points to rally her club in the second quarter while freshman Kyleigh Sellnow added six of her nine in the frame.
But a six-point halftime deficit of 26-20 became insurmountable when the Warriors rattled off the first six points in the third.
Monroe hopes to have the throttle down when WIAA Division 2 regionals tip off Tuesday night and the Crimson Tide of Edgerton rolls into town.
