DEFOREST - Junior Maggie Setterstrom won her second straight match at No. 2 singles, but the Monroe High School girls tennis team dropped a nonconference dual match to DeForest 6-1 on Tuesday.
Setterstrom defeated DeForest senior Abby Williams 6-3, 6-3.
"Maggie had an aggressive strategy and executed it well," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "Maggie attacked the net early in most points and had a lot of success up there forcing her opponent into errors."
Monroe was coming off a 6-1 defeat at the hands of McFarland on Monday
"It was a windy night in DeForest, and we didn't adjust well to the wind," Saugstad said. "Playing in the wind is really an experience thing, and DeForest had more experience and adjusted better."
DeForest freshman Cecile Fuchs defeated Monroe freshman Grace Tostrud 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. At No. 3 singles, DeForest senior Emma Reimer beat Monroe freshman Jensen Christensen 6-4, 6-2. DeForest freshman Leah Miller topped Monroe junior Syke Allen 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
"Grace Tostrud ran into another talented freshman," Saugstad said. "It looks like No. 1 singles in this part of the state is going to be very strong this season."
The Norskies swept all three doubles matches. At No. 1, DeForest's Claire Fabian and Grace Larson defeated Monroe juniors Ashley Placek and Hallie Signer 6-3, 6-1. DeForest senior Izzy Dreischmeier and sophomore Audrey Williams beat Monroe junior Parris Bunker and sophomore Sam Huizenga 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. At No. 3, Monroe's Kiara Miller and Liz Skatrud lost 6-0, 6-2 to DeForest's Melissa Xiong and Dianna Xiong.
"All of our doubles teams struggled with positioning and net play tonight," Saugstad said. "We will continue to emphasize these things in practice and hope to see improvements."
