FORT ATKINSON - Three Monroe High School girls basketball players bottled up a Fort Atkinson drive down the lane and Monroe junior Lexi Hilliard came up with a steal with two seconds to go to seal the Cheesemakers' 46-44 win over the Blackhawks on Tuesday.
"I was really proud of the defensive effort we got at the end of the game," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "We had to get a stop we needed to secure the win. We had three people who did a good job of rotating to the ball and I think it was deflected and Lexi was there for the steal."
It marks the second straight game Monroe (7-9, 3-5 Badger South) has won in the closing seconds. The win comes on the heels of the Cheesemakers knocking off McFarland last week.
Monroe freshman Sydney Hilliard scored a team-high 14 points, and sophomore Sydney Mathiason added 13 points.
Midway through the first half, the Cheesemakers went on a 14-3 run to close the half with a 24-13 lead.
"I thought in the first half we did a good job of moving the ball and finding those open shots," Mathiason said.
Fort Atkinson continued to play a 1-2-2 zone in the second half and made drives to the basket hard to come by.
"They do a good job taking up a lot of space in that zone," Mathiason said. "In the second half, we were not able to find those holes as much and were not able to find our offensive flow. Part of that is because of how they play that zone."
