DARLINGTON - Junior running back Hunter Johnson has keyed the Darlington High School football team's run to the WIAA Division 6 state championship game, and he was named to the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-State first team, which was released Monday.
Johnson has rushed for 2,246 yards and 40 touchdowns for the Redbirds. Darlington, ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press small school division state poll, will play in the state title game against St. Mary's Springs at 1:05 p.m. Thursday at Camp Randall Stadium.
Johnson helped Darlington reach the state championship game for the third straight year by rushing for 188 yards and four touchdowns to power the Redbirds to a 42-12 win over Melrose-Mindoro in a state semifinal Friday.
The coaches' group also named Amherst quarterback Garrett Groshek as the Offensive Player of the Year and Menomonie senior linebacker Mason Stokke as the Defensive Player of the Year.
Evansville-Albany senior defensive end Andrew Berra was named honorable mention all-state. Darlington junior Jesse Sturtz was named honorable mention all-state at inside linebacker. Senior teammate Taylor Evenstad was named honorable mention all-state as an offensive lineman.
