BOSCOBEL - Despite grabbing the lead in the first inning, the Darlington softball team dropped their season opener to Boscobel, 14-1 Monday, April 8.
The Redbirds jumped out to the early lead, on an RBI single from senior Anna Fitzsimons. Fitzsimons finished the day 1-for-2, and senior Jacke Johnson also finished 2-for-3 for the Redbirds.
Junior pitcher Jenna Foulker held the Bulldogs scoreless in the bottom of the first inning, but Boscobel would not be held down for much longer.
The Bulldogs scored three runs in the second inning, followed by four in the third and seven in the fourth. Boscobel banged out 13 hits in the game to Darlington's 3. Cassie Wunnicke collected the win for Boscobel, while Foulker took the loss.
Darlington's first-year coach Karen Bennett knows the season is young, but she has already identified the areas where the Redbirds need some work.
"We struggled a bit with pitching. We definitely need a lot of work on our hitting," she said. "The outfield hasn't really had a lot of practice indoors. The infield played good. Really, (Boscobel) just hit the ball on us."
For the Redbirds, the season opened with a loss, but it opened nonetheless. That was a fact that wasn't lost on Bennett and her players.
Were they excited to get outside?
"Oh my gosh, yes. It was beautiful weather," Bennett said. "They were very positive ... they didn't hang their heads, and I was happy (with that)."
The Redbirds (0-1) will look to bounce back with their home opener against Riverdale on Thursday, April 11.
