Darlington rips Southwestern

HAZEL GREEN - The Darlington High School football team scored an eye-popping 56 points in the first quarter, Hunter Johnson carried the ball five times and scored three touchdowns, and the Redbirds rolled over Southwestern 84-6 Friday.

The Redbirds, the second-ranked team in the small division of the AP state poll, are 7-0 overall and 4-1 in the SWAL, while Southwestern falls to 1-6, 0-5.

Seniors Trevor Johnson and Hunter Johnson combined for seven touchdowns in the first quarter.

Trevor Johnson opened the scoring with a kickoff return for a TD. He also scored on a 35-yard interception return, a 25-yard run and a 57-yard punt return. He carried the ball four times for 41 yards.

Hunter Johnson added TDs on three runs from scrimmage of 1, 38 and 33 yards. He rushed for 144 yards.

Junior Tyler Mosley also scored in the first quarter for the Redbirds on a 27-yard run. Mosley carried the ball three times for 32 yards.

Junior Kameron Blosch scored on a 33-yard run in the second quarter, and Darlington had a 63-6 lead at halftime

In the third quarter, sophomore Stryker Fitzsimons scored on a 46-yard run and senior Ryan Glendenning added a punt return for a touchdown.

Sophomore Blake Whalen capped the scoring in the fourth quarter with an interception return for a touchdown.

Darlington ran 19 running plays for 323 yards. The Redbirds didn't run any pass plays.

Southwestern gained 92 yards on the ground and 97 yards through the air.



New Glarus-Monticello 14, Mosinee 12

NEW GLARUS - Junior Jared Carney had a 3-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter and the New Glarus-Monticello defense made it stand up against Mosinee.

With the homecoming win, New Glarus-Monticello improves to 4-3, 2-0 Capitol South.

The Glarner Knights were led by sophomore Zach Feller who rushed for 117 yards on 20 carries.

The Knights cashed in on a 15-play, 69-yard drive with senior quarterback John Chenoweth scoring on a 1-yard run to take a 7-0 lead. The Knights converted three times on fourth down on the drive, including a fake punt.

The Knights blocked an extra point and stuffed a two-point conversion run. Those two defensive plays made the difference.

New Glarus-Monticello will host Waterloo next week in a critical Capitol South Conference game.



In other area games Friday, Pecatonica-Argyle overwhelmed River Ridge 48-6, Brodhead-Juda routed Whitewater 42-12 and Evansville-Albany upended East Troy 42-15.

Coaches from Pecatonica-Argyle, Brodhead-Juda and Evansville-Albany did not report information on their games to the Times.
