DARLINGTON - Both the Darlington girls and boys track teams ran to Southwest Wisconsin Activities League championships Tuesday, May 14.
"We knew coming in we were in the running," Darlington coach Todd Bastian said. "We knew Cuba City had really tough boys and girls teams. We needed to perform and the kids performed tonight."
The Darlington girls track team won its third conference title in the last four years, outdistancing Cuba City 190-150. The Darlington boys won its fourth straight title 155-124 over the Cubans.
The Darlington girls track team dominated the long distance events. The Redbirds swept the top three spots in the 3,200-meter run and took three of the top four spots in the 1,600. Darlington senior Tatum Evenstad won the 3,200 (13 minutes, 40.21 seconds) just ahead of teammate Harley Douglas, who was second (13:40.43) and Johanna Meister, who took third (14:19.62). Darlington senior Christa Wamsley won the 1,600 (5:52.16) and Douglas finished second (6:00.22).
Darlington senior Cheyenne Wolfe finished first in the 800 (2:31.68) and Claire Cullen was second (2;32.63). Carly Reilly won the 100 (12.88) and Alison Wedig took first in the 400 (1:01.97) and second in the 200 (28.26).
"There were some girls hurting tonight," Bastian said. "This is about as balanced of a team as we have had. I'm very happy with the guts of our team. Guts is what got it done tonight. It was a true team effort."
Darlington senior Cassidy Chambers finished second in the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches) and second in the pole vault (8-6). Abigail Merriam took third in the high jump (4-10) and Rebecca Mathias was third in the 300 hurdles (52.54).
Mathias and Wolfe teamed with Wamsley and Cullen to win the 1,600 relay (4:21.90). The Redbirds' 3,200 relay team of Evenstad, Wolfe, Wamsley and Cullen finished first (11:23.58). The Redbirds took second in both the 400 relay (53.18) and the 800 relay (1:56.35).
In the boys' meet, Darlington junior Tyson Miehe captured conference championships in the 1,600 (4:53.7) and 3,200 (9:52.13). The Redbirds swept the top three spots in the 1,600 with Thomas Schultz finishing second (4:58.10) and Robert Martin taking third (5:04.3).
Darlington junior Kyle Johnson won both the 110 high hurdles and 300 hurdles (42.02). Johnson set the school record in the 110 hurdles at the Cuba City Quad earlier this season (14.8). Darlington's Quinn Cullen took first in the 400 (53.29) and second in the 800 (2:05.74).
"The distance crew is the backbone of our team," Bastian said of the boys' team. "Our younger sprinters are really stepping up."
Darlington's Ethan Glendenning won the high jump (5-10), and the Redbirds posted second-place finishes in the 1,600 relay (3:42.92) and 3,200 relay (8:33.25).
Sugar River wins Capitol South
WATERLOO - Both the girls and boys track teams from Sugar River also claimed conference championships, as the Raiders swept the team titles at the Capitol South Conference Meet.
The Sugar River girls won 9 of 18 events and finished second in four others to rack up 132 points, outdistancing second place Marshall (72 points) by 60 points.
Sugar River's Alexis Hanson dominated the sprint events. Hanson took home first place in the 100-meter dash (13.10), the 200 (26.84), and the 400 (1:02.63).
Sugar River also swept the distance events. Madeline Brunner won both the 800 (2:26.32) and the 1,600 (5:30.33). Brianne Roska took first in the 3,200 (13:16.36).
The Raiders also got a sweep in the hurdles courtesy of Emily Diaz, who won both the 100-meter hurdles (16.61) and the 300 (50.06).
Sugar River finished second in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x800 relays.
In the field, Harley Hollis picked up a first-place finish for Sugar River in the triple jump at 31 feet, 8.5 inches. Ashley Clark finished second in the pole vault at eight feet, three inches.
The boys championship was more closely contested, as the Raiders (133 points) won by just nine points over second place Marshall (124).
The Raiders swept the distance events. Alexander Yeiser took first in both the 800 (2:04.68) and 1,600 (4:43.34). Tucker McMahon won the 3,200 in 10 minutes, 33.11 seconds.
Kelvin Johnson added a win for the Raiders in the 300-meter hurdles (39.85) and also took second in the 110 hurdles (15.90).
In the relays, Sugar River won the 4x400 (3:38.70) and took second in the 4x100, 4x200, and 4x800.
The Raiders picked up two wins in the field. Garrison Woods won both the long jump (21 feet, 2 inches) and the triple jump (42'3"). Woods also took second in the high jump and Landon Zimmerman took second in the shot put.
