Darlington girls, boys track capture regional titles

CUBA CITY - Both the Darlington boys and girls track teams won WIAA Division 3 Cuba City regional title.

The Darlington girls track team outdistanced Cuba City 149.5-139. Black Hawk finished third (139), Albany took sixth, Pecatonica-Argyle was eighth (50) and Monticello took ninth (24).

The Darlington boys track team rolled to the championship 162-130 over Cuba City. Albany finished fourth (86.5), Monticello took sixth (47) and Black Hawk was eighth (30).

Black Hawk junior Jen Wellnitz won four individual regional championships including the 100-meter dash (12.48), 200 (26.22), long jump 17 feet, 10 inches) and the triple jump (35-11).

Albany junior Bailey Hlavachek won the 800 (2:30.67) and the 1,600 (5:51.71). Area Green and Lafayette county track teams had the top four finishers in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. Darlington senior Cheyenne Wolfe finished second in the 800 (2:35.50), Monticello senior Amy Silver took third (2:41.29) and Darlington junior Darby Fitzsimons was fourth (2:43.36).

The Redbirds swept the top three spots in the 3,200. Darlington senior Christa Wamsley won the 3,200 (12;31.44) and junior teammate Claire Cullen was second (12:54.13). Darlington senior Tatum Evenstad took third (13:06.67) and Albany freshman Sydnee Woyak was fourth (13;11.32). Darlington senior Harley Douglas took second in the 1,600 and Darlington sophomore Johanna Meister was third followed by Pecatonica-Argyle freshman Samantha Erickson (6:06.64).

Darlington senior Cassidy Chambers won the pole vault (9-0) and took third in the high jump (4-9). Darlington senior Abigail Merriam finished second in the high jump (5-0) and Albany junior Chantel Rogers was third in the high jump (4-9) and second in the 400 (1:02.30).

Pecatonica-Argyle's Hannah Swenson took third in the 100 (13.37) and Black Hawk's Aleigha Sigafus took third in the 400 (1:06.18). Black Hawk junior Olivia Holland finished third in the 300 hurdles (52.18) and Darlington junior Courtney King was fourth (54.73). Pecatonica-Argyle junior Cassidy Steiner finished second in the shot put (32-9 3/4) and Darlington senior Kelsey Wiegel was fourth (30-9). Darlington's Shai Rowe was fourth in the pole vault (7-6).

Wolfe teamed with Evenstad, Wamsley and Cullen to help the Redbirds win the 3,200 relay (10:37.86) ahead of second-place Pecatonica-Argyle (10:48.24). Black hawk finished third (10:48.55) and Albany was fourth (10:57.75). The Redbirds' 1,600 relay team of Carly Reilly, Claire Scott, Alison Wedig and Carly Langkamp took first (4:13.81). The Redbirds added second-place finishes in the 400 relay (53.33) and 800 relay (1:50.32).

Black Hawk finished fourth in the 400 relay (55.4) and Pecatonica-Argyle was fourth in the 800 relay (1:56.59). The Vikings also added a fourth-place finish in the 1,600 relay (4:25.44).

In the boys' regional meet, Darlington junior Tyson Miehe won the 1,600 (4:46.26) and the 3,200 (10:08.7). Darlington junior Kyle Johnson won the 110 hurdles (15.58) and the 300 hurdles (43.49). Darlington senior Storm Wiegel won the 200 (23.58). Darlington senior Ethan Glendenning won the high jump (5-6) and freshman teammate Blake Cwynar took second in the high jump (5-4) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (46.28).

Four area runners qualified for the sectional in the 1,600 and 3,200. Monticello sophomore John Zuber took second in the 1,600 (4:49.51) and Albany sophomore Aaron Johnson was third (4:50.28) followed by Darlington senior Robert Martin (4:51.67). Albany sophomore Brennan Bloedel finished second in the 3,200 (10:15.50) and Darlington senior Garth Garrison was third (10:21.93). Darlington sophomore Thomas Schultz finished fourth (10:39.20).

Albany senior Jose Ramirez won the 800 (2:03.67) just ahead of Darlington senior Quinn Cullen (2:04.20). Albany senior Chad Helland took third (2:08.48).

Black Hawk junior Jayden Rufenacht won the 100 (11.45) and took second in the 100 (23.92). Pecatonica-Argyle senior Nathan Loyd finished first in the 400 (53.55) and Albany junior David Edmondson was fourth (55.16).

The Redbirds' 3,200 relay team of Cullen, Garrison, Miehe and Dane Siegenthaler won with a time of 8:46.53, which was about 10 seconds ahead of Albany, which took second (8:56.94). Monticello finished third (9:01.15). Albany's 1,600 relay team of David Edmondson, Johnson, Dallas Edmondson and Ramirez won (3:38.26), which was less than one second ahead of the Redbirds, which took second (3:38.97). Monticello finished fourth in the 1,600 relay (3:40.11).

The Ponies finished third in the 800 relay (1:39.59). The Redbirds added a second-place finish in the 400 relay (47.31) and a fourth place in the 800 relay (1:42.5).

Darlington senior Patrick Roche finished second in the pole vault (10-6) and Albany senior Henrik Eriksen was fourth 9-0. Albany junior Logan Webb took second in the discus (147-10). Pecatonica-Argyle's Skylar Cragg took fourth in the triple jump (37-5) and Darlington sophomore Cruz Bahena was fourth in the shot put (42-1 1/2).
