Darlington boys win regional

DARLINGTON - In the opening round of regional meets, the host Darlington track and field team had a strong showing in both the boys and girls final standings.

Darlington's boys team ran away from the competition with an overall score of 172 points. In the 800 meters, Darlington junior Dane Siegenthaler finished first with a time of 2 minutes, 5.24 seconds, followed by Monticello's Hunter Pratt, and Redbirds teammate Blake Cwynar. Starting his postseason off with a solid start was Darlington's Tyson Miehe, who won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters with times of 4:33.59 and 10:03.19, respectively. Monticello's John Zuber (second) and Albany's Aaron Johnson (third) rounded out the top three in the 1,600 meters, while Miehe's teammates of Jaden Komprood and Thomas Schultz finished second and third, respectively, in the 3,200 meters.

Darlington's Kyle Johnson won both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, posting first-place times of 15.68 and 42.20 seconds, respectively. Teammate Tomas Zander finished third in the 300-meter hurdles. Other first-place finishers for the Redbirds included the 1,600- and 3,200-meter relay teams. Second-place finishers for Darlington include Cruz Bahena (shot put), A.J. Coulthard (discus), and the 800-meter relay team. The Redbirds 400-meter relay team finished third in their event.

Pacing the Monticello boys squad was a first-place finish by Andy Yaun in the 400 meters, finishing with a time of 53.59 seconds. Other notable finishes for the Ponies include a second-place finish for the 3,200-meter relay team.

Leading the way for the Black Hawk boys was senior Jayden Rufenacht who had third- and second-place finishes in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, respectively.

For Albany, Johson finished third in the 1,600 meters, Logan Webb finished third in the discus, and the 1,600- and 3,200-meter relay teams finished second and third in their respective events.

For the girls, Cuba City won the overall meet with a score of 177 points, while Darlington came in third with a team score of 104.

Picking up first-place finishes for the Redbirds were Claire Cullen in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:45.52. Sophomore Carly Langkamp won the pole vault with a height of 8 feet, while senior teammates Shai Rowe and Shannon McDaniel finished second and third, respectively. The 3,200-meter relay team also finished first in their event with a time of 10:38.57.

Second-place finishers for the Darlington girls include Langkamp in the 400 meters and the 1,600-meter relay team.

Black Hawk's Jen Wellnitz made her case for returning to the state podium, as the senior had another all-around night. Wellnitz finished with first-place finishes in the 100-meter dash (12.75 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (26.68 seconds) to go along with second-place finishes in the long and triple jumps. Rounding out top finishes for the Warriors girls squad were the 3,200-meter relay team (second place) and Olivia Holland with a third-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles.

For Pec-Argyle, top finishes included Samantha Erickson in the 1,600 meters (third place), the 400-meter relay team (third place), and the 800-meter relay team (third place).

Notable finishes for the Albany girls were: Bailey Hlavachek in the 800 meters (second place), Sydnee Woyak in the 1,600 meters (second place), Lauren Blumer in the 3,200 meters (third place), and the 3,200-meter relay team (third place).
