CUBA CITY - After winning a regional championship in the 1,600-meter run, Darlington sophomore Tyson Miehe wasn't surprised by the long distance showcase area schools put on Monday at the WIAA Division 3 Cuba City regional.
"We have quality runners here," said Miehe who won the 1,600 with a time of 4 minutes, 36.53 seconds, as four area runners that qualified for the WIAA Division 3 Bangor sectional on Thursday. "It's just impressive to see guys around here dedicated to running good times. They can compete with anyone in the state."
Miehe, who has the second fastest Division 3 mile and two-mile in the state, also won a regional title in the 3,200 (10:23) to help the Redbirds run away with the regional championship 151-116 over Cuba City. In fact, area schools swept the top four sectional qualifying spots in the 1,600, 800, and 3,200.
"Regionals is just to get ready for sectionals and to get a good solid time to get in the fast heat at the sectional," Miehe said. "You are definitely not going all out. We have a meet on Thursday to qualify for state."
Black hawk senior Chris Priebe took second in the 1,600 (4:38.38) ahead of Darlington senior Destin Komprood (4:45.74). Pecatonica-Argyle senior Wyatt Massey was fourth (4:48.34). In the 3,200, the Redbirds swept the top three spots. Darlington senior Michael Sinclair finished second (10:29.57) and senior teammate Kent Miehe was third (10:30.26). Pecatonica-Argyle finished second (8:42.88), Albany took third (8:50.13) followed by Monticello (8:54.28).
"For today our only goal was to be in the fast heat on Thursday," Kent Miehe said. "We know today wasn't our most important one (race). We are trying to keep everyone fresh and get as many through as we can."
Black Hawk's 400 relay team of D.J. Warrell, Jayden Rufenacht, Hayden Schliem and Jace Johnsrud took first (45.50), which was about one second ahead of Cuba City. "The last time we ran in Cuba City they beat us," Schliem said of the Cubans in the 400 relay. "It was just a good night to get someone back that got us. We have to work on handoffs. That is our big issue. Handoffs can take up to a couple tenths of a second. Two-tenths of a second can make or break you. We still have work to do."
Pecatonica-Argyle junior Nathan Loyd won the 400 (53.61) and teammate Kyle Zwicker was second (53.92). Nick Huffman finished second in the discus (130-3) and Zwicker added a fourth place finish in the long jump (19-4 1/2).

Woodruff was second place in the 300 low hurdles (45.02) and Darlington's Sam Johnson was fourth (46.5). Warrell added a third place in the triple jump (39-8).
Black Hawk coach Cory Milz said Schliem hasn't run the 200 much this year, but since he dropped a field event he was switched to the 800 relay. Milz is confident the Warriors can continue to make a run in the 400 relay where they have the fifth fastest Division 3 time in the state.
"I think we will have a pretty good shot of getting through the sectional," he said.
