Darlington boys capture sectional title

FENNIMORE -Darlington junior Payton Heinberg ran to an individual sectional championship and the Darlington boys cross country team is in contention to win its seventh straight Division 3 state title.

Darlington had four runners finish in the top 12 at Saturday's WIAA Division 3 sectional in Fennimore, winning the team title with 41 points and qualifying for state. New Glarus-Monticello took second (129) and also qualified for the state meet, which will be at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids this Saturday.

Darlington senior Tanner Evenstad finished third (18:00.6) and junior Tucker Lange took eighth (18:23.6). Senior Paul King placed 11th (18:49.8) and sophomore Bailey Schwartz was 18th (19:24.6).

New Glarus-Monticello freshman Connor McCoy took sixth (18:11.1) to lead the Glarner Knights. Sophomore Adam Nelson finished 13th (19:08.4), freshman Rudy Wicker was 33rd (19:52.8), freshman Joe Quaglia took 36th (19:58.5) and freshman Ty Ready finished 41st (20:05.6).

The other state qualifier is Albany junior Josh Dahl who took fifth (18:06.9). Albany took eighth (231) out of 18 teams. Pecatonica-Argyle took 10th (279).

Albany freshman Luke Johnson placed 34th (19:56.3) and freshman Owen Baertschi was 45th (20:20). Senior Logun Parker finished 67th (21:08) and senior Garrett Hlavachek was 80th (21:40.8).

Pecatonica-Argyle sophomore Payton Flannery took 17th (19:23.5). The Vikings had three of the top 50 runners. Sophomore Troy Nickels placed 32nd (19:52) and sophomore Kyle Hartley was 46th (20:23).

In the girls' race, defending state champion Darlington took third with 65 points and missed qualifying for state as a team.

Lancaster won the sectional team championship with 52 points. Marshall (56), the sectional runner-up, also qualified for state as a team. Albany took fourth (93) and New Glarus-Monticello placed eighth (264).

Darlington senior Reghan Komprood finished third (20:54.9) and junior Ilse Mendez took seventh (21:16) and both qualified for state. Albany senior Emma Guenther finished eighth (21:33) and earned a fourth state berth in her career.

Darlington senior Erin Wolf took 14th (22:42.5), senior teammate Miriam Lindqvist placed 20th (23:12.7) and senior Emma Crist was 21st (23:17).

Albany junior Madison Peters finished 15th (22:44.8) and junior Megan Anderson took 19th (23:07.2). Sophomore Kristin O'Bel placed 25th (23:37.6) and junior Kaitlyn Trow was 26th (23:39.4).

New Glarus-Monticello was led by senior Gabby Whisler, who finished 30th (23:55). Sophomore teammate Molly Molencamp placed 39th (24:40.1), senior Walela Three-Sticks finished 40th (24:44.4), junior Libbie Melvin was 77th (29:02.8) and junior Emily Streiff took 78th (29:04.1).
