MADISON - Madison Edgewood reloaded after graduating several top players and the Crusaders knocked off Monroe in a dual match 6-1 Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The lone win for the Cheesemakers came at No. 1 doubles where seniors Ellie Grossen and Chandra McGuire defeated Edgewood's Matha Longley and Grace Siebert 6-0, 7-6 (7). With the win, Grossen and McGuire improve to 11-0.

"In the first set, Ellie and Chandra came out and took it to Edgewood with solid shots and aggressiveness," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "The girls played from behind the entire second set, but hung in there and got the points they needed to. In the tiebreak, Ellie and Chandra faced three set points against them and each time we hit a good shot or Edgewood hit a tentative one. I keep telling Ellie and Chandra there is still room for improvement."

Edgewood's Emma Sango defeated Monroe senior Allie Coplien at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0. Edgewood's Maddie Molitor at No. 2 singles defeated Monroe's Chelsea Miller 6-0, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Edgewood's Kate Zellmer defeated Monroe's Eva Priewe 6-1, 6-0. Katie Demianiuk at No. 4 singles for the Cheesemakers lost to Brita Hovde 7-5, 6-4.

The Crusaders' No. 2 doubles team defeated the Cheesemakers' Paige Prien and Erin Gellings 6-3, 6-1. At No. 3 doubles, Edgewood's Liu King and Catherine Smith defeated Monroe's Alisa Fager and Amber Jenson 6-1, 6-1.

"I don't know if we came into all seven matches believing we could compete with Edgewood," Saugstad said. "If you don't believe in yourself, it's pretty tough to play a good match."
