MADISON - The Monroe boys basketball team is looking to put together a complete game using fundamental skills after losing to Madison Edgewood 49-38 Saturday, Jan. 18.

Edgewood (5-7, 4-3 Badger South) grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and that led to several second-chance scoring opportunities.

"The two issues we had for most of the game is we gave up too many offensive rebounds and we had 14 turnovers," Monroe coach Pat Murphy said. "Those two statistics will put you in a hole in a hurry."

Edgewood raced out to a 13-9 lead in the first quarter and led by 12 points at the half.

"We pride ourselves on doing the little things - rebounding, passing and catching the ball," Murphy said. "You don't have to be the strongest kid on the team or jump the highest to do those things."

Monroe senior Jake Hirsbrunner scored a team-high 10 points and senior Charlie Kind added nine points. The Cheesemakers shot just 29 percent.

"No matter what you do on defense, you have to find a way to score," Murphy said. "We have to find a way to consistently score in the paint or kick it out for shots. It doesn't matter if you are playing a conference or a summer league game. You have to find a way to score points."

The Cheesemakers shot 9 of 14 from the free throw line and the Crusaders were 18 of 21. Edgewood's Alex Wendler scored a game-high 15 points and Jeff Zellner scored 14 points.

The Cheesemakers will play at Stoughton Tuesday, Jan. 21. The last time the Cheesemakers played the Vikings, they rallied from a 22-point deficit before losing in overtime.
