MADISON - The Monroe volleyball team was no match for Madison Edgewood, last year's WIAA Divi-sion 2 state runner-up, as the Crusaders swept the Cheesemakers in three sets 25-6, 25-11, 25-12 on Thursday.
"We just started out slow and we were maybe a little intimidated by them in warmups," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said of the Crusaders in the team's first Badger South Conference match.
With the loss, Monroe dropped to 0-2, 0-1 Badger South.
Monroe junior Hannah Vetterli had a team-high five kills. Sophomore Hannah Neuenschwander had four assists and two aces and sophomore Chloe Schroeder posted two blocks.
"We had decent net play and played better in the third game, but it was too late," Witt said. "It is what it is. We will just move on."
The Cheesemakers will host the Monroe Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday. Monroe will play five matches Saturday.
"We have been a good tournament team," Witt said. "They know they have to come out and play harder."
Juda 3, Ithaca 2
ITHACA - Juda rallied after falling behind early and clawed its way back to win a decisive fifth set to win its season opener in thrilling fashion over Ithaca 23-25, 25-17, 25-10, 14-25, 15-9.
"We had a slow start," Juda coach Scott Anderson said. "The first 10 points by our standards were pretty ugly. This was a big step to come back and win in five. We didn't win or go five last year. When we went to five we buckled down and paid more attention to our serves and serve receive. We just kept attacking."
Juda sophomore Sara Jordan had 12 kills and six aces. Both sophomore Chelsea Burkhalter and junior Megan Powers had 12 assists. Burkhalter had four of her team-high seven aces in the fifth game.
"I think they see now that we can win on defense if we don't give up points on offense," he said.
