Crusaders take down Cheese in four

MADISON - To begin the second half of conference play, the Monroe Cheesemakers had plenty to be smiling about after game one of their Badger South volleyball match at Madison Edgewood Thursday. Monroe won the first set, 25-22, but the Cheesemakers couldn't keep the momentum going their way as they dropped the next three sets to the Crusaders, 25-17, 25-14, 25-15. With the loss, the Cheesemakers fell to 0-7 in the Badger South and 0-9 overall.

The Cheesemakers will host the Stoughton Vikings Tuesday in another Badger South conference match.

Juda 3, Pecatonica 0

JUDA - Junior Courtney Moisan had six kills and a pair of blocks to lead the Juda Panthers to a 25-16, 25-7, 25-14 victory over the Pecatonica Vikings in a Six Rivers East volleyball match Thursday. The Panthers also got 15 assists from senior Morgan Kamholz, six aces from junior Miranda Trotter, and six digs from senior Katlyn DeVoe.

"We really served well," said Juda head coach Tara Lund. "Everyone had at least one ace in our rotation. We did a nice job of passing and getting it to our setter (Kamholz)."

The Vikings were led by junior Michelle Francois with six assists and Madelyn Fischer with three kills. Senior Allison Swenson added six digs for Pecatonica.

Juda (3-4 Six Rivers East) will host Barneveld Thursday and Pecatonica (0-7) will host Albany Tuesday.

Monticello 3, Barneveld 1

MONTICELLO - The Monticello Ponies rebounded from a game one loss Thursday and defeated the Barneveld Eagles 18-25, 25-13, 25-23, 25-14 to remain unbeaten in the Six Rivers East at 7-0. Sophomore Marissa Berg had 13 kills and five blocks and senior C.J. Dilley racked up 31 assists to pace the Ponies. Monticello also had 10 kills from junior Jordan Kubly, 10 digs from senior Katie Gierhart and five aces from senior Desiree Marty.

Monticello head coach Teresa Eliason said the loss in game one was the result of her team playing uncharacteristically tight. "We had 15 unforced errors in game one. Then, we relaxed and played our game beginning with the second set," she said.

Monticello (9-1 overall) will compete in the Cassville Invitational Tournament Saturday before traveling to Argyle Tuesday.

Brodhead 3, Palmyra-Eagle 2

BRODHEAD - The Brodhead Cardinals need six extra points of extended play in game one and a two-point win in game five to edge the Palmyra-Eagle Panthers 31-29, 22-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-13 in Rock Valley South conference action Thursday. Sophomore Carly Mohns scorched the net with 19 kills, nine digs, and five blocks to lead the Cardinals. Freshman Payton Wright notched 33 assists while sophomore Rachel Heller and junior Heather Shanks added a pair of aces. Junior Taylor Douglas also had 12 kills and eight digs for the Cardinals.

Brodhead (11-12, 3-2 Rock Valley South) will host Big Foot Tuesday.

Iowa-Grant 3, Darlington 0

LIVINGSTON - The Iowa-Grant Panthers swept the Darlington Redbirds in three sets, 25-16, 25-12, 25-18 in SWAL Conference action Thursday. Senior Laura Steiner had six kills and four blocks to lead Darlington. Junior Cassidy Chambers chipped in with 10 assists and two aces and junior Ala Merriam tracked down 10 digs for the Redbirds.
