MONROE - The Monroe volleyball team lost a close three-game match to Madison Edgewood without middle blocker Taylor Barrett on Tuesday.
The Crusaders swept the Cheesemakers 25-17, 26-24, 25-18. Monroe coach Danya Ward said Barrett missed the match due to an appointment.
"That played a factor in our offense," Ward said. "I think she would have been a big force blocking."
Monroe senior Elicia Frie stepped in and played as the middle blocker.
"She did everything she needed to do on short notice," Ward said of Frie.
Monroe senior Becca Armstrong had a team-high nine kills and senior Ashley Curtis racked up 23 digs.
Senior Heather Barta had nine assists and junior Kristen Vetterli had three blocks. Junior Kayla Updike had two aces.
"I think they started out strong in the first game and got nervous when Edgewood came into their groove," Ward said.
The Cheesemakers led most of the second game and had a 23-21 lead but couldn't pull it out.
With the loss, Monroe drops to 4-12, 0-5 Badger South. The Cheesemakers will play in the Mount Horeb Invitational on Saturday.
