MONROE - Year in and year out, Edgewood's girls tennis team is one of the top programs in the Badger South. On Thursday, the Crusaders continued their winning ways, knocking off the Cheesemakers 5-2.

"Edgewood always comes on strong and is a tough match for us," Monroe head coach Stephanie Miller said. "Our girls fought hard to the end."

Top singles player Kristin McArdle and No. 3 singles Lily Priewe were the only winners for Monroe.

"Kristin and Lily sealed wins today with two solid three-set matches," Miller said.

McArdle knocked off Sarah Murphy 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

"Kristin again played a very solid match at No. 1 singles and played an aggressive game to control her opponent," Miller said.

Priewe started out slow, but played in top form in the final two sets, defeating Courtney Burke 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 2 singles, Ellie Shuda took her first loss of the year, falling to Sydnee Kirsch 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.

"Ellie Shuda played a great match and fought hard against a very similar player," Miller said.

Monroe lost all three doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles team of Brooke McBain and Kelsey Erickson fell to Rachel Wabers and Laren Keller 6-2, 7-5.

"At No. 1 doubles, we had a slow start but were able to come back a bit only to come up short in the second set," Miller said.

Monroe's No. 2 doubles team of Becca Flannery and Rachel Thompson lost to Mariele Van Rybrock 6-0, 6-1 and the No. 3 doubles tandem of Ellie Grossen and Elisabeth Brunner lost to Natalie Meicher and Michaela Johnke 7-5, 6-4.

"We look forward to meeting Edgewood again at conference," Miller said of the Sept. 24 and 25 conference tournament.

Monroe next travels to Stoughton Sept. 9.
