VERONA - The Monroe soccer team made the trip to Verona in dreary weather conditions to take on conference rival Madison Edgewood. The Cheesemakers and coach Miriam O'Neill were optimistic that they could steal a win against the Crusaders on the turf field at Reddan Park in Verona, but lost the game 1-0.

"It was a beautiful field," O'Neill said. "It was ideal for playing a match on, especially with the weather going on."

From the drop of the ball on the pitch to the very end, the game between the Cheesemakers and Edgewood was played at a fast pace. Eight minutes and 19 seconds into the game, the Crusaders scored a goal by Lauren Netzel, who narrowly got the ball past Monroe goalkeeper Gwen Ambrose who had nine saves.

With a stifling defensive pressure, the Cheesemakers held the Crusader's offense in check, which opened up things for Monroe's offense in the second half.

Unfortunately for Monroe, the Cheesemakers could not sink a shot past Crusader's goalkeeper Katie Bolz, who defended all nine of Monroe's scoring opportunities.

"It was a very exciting game," O'Neill said. "The game could've gone either way. It was competitive, tough, and all of the things you look for in a match. We had lots of good opportunities with our strong aggressive style and well-played combos, (but) unfortunately we just weren't able to put the ball in the back of the net. Either way, I'm proud of how we played."
