MONROE - Madison Edgewood's Annie Penwell scored two goals to lift the Crusaders to a 4-1 win over Monroe Tuesday at Honey Creek Park.

Edgewood sophomore Brita Hovde scored a goal on an assist from senior midfielder Abby Kothe at 7 minutes, 15 seconds to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. Penwell scored her first goal at 32:36 to extend the Crusaders' lead to 2-0 at the half.

"I think this is the case of the score not really reflecting the game," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "This game was very competitive. We have a really young team. They (Edgewood) are a very deep and skilled team. Edgewood's team is mainly juniors and seniors. To have such a competitive game against such an experienced team I think really says a lot."

With the loss, Monroe drops to 5-5-2, 0-2 Badger South.

Penwell scored her second goal at 58:29 to give the Crusaders a commanding 3-0 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Monroe freshman Brynn Ritschard scored a goal on an assist from junior Maddie Kallgren at 59:27. The Crusaders outshot the Cheesemakers 18-14.

"We had a lot of really good shots on goal," O'Neill said. "We had shots that just pinged off the cross bar or that were just wide. Unfortunately, we just didn't find the back of the net. The possessions were probably about 50-50."

Monroe freshman Reily Pond had four saves playing goalkeeper in the first half. Monroe senior Gwendolyn Ambrose had two saves as goalie in the second half.

The Cheesemakers will look to pick up their first conference win when they play at Monona Grove at 7 p.m. Friday. Monroe will then host Platteville at 11 a.m. Saturday at Honey Creek park.

"The beautiful thing about soccer is you never know how it will go," O'Neill said. "I feel like we are ready to take on anybody."
