JANESVILLE - The Janesville Craig High School volleyball team swept Monroe Monday in a nonconference match.

The Cougars defeated the Cheesemakers 25-17, 25-22, 25-17.

"Serve receive seemed to get the best of us in the beginning of each set and then something clicked, and we started to play our game," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. "We normally don't have games on Monday, but we still have to come out on the court to play."

Monroe sophomore Sydney Mathiason had a team-high six kills. Senior teammate Paige Murphy dished out 14 assists, and junior Hannah Neuenschwander had six assists.

Monroe junior Lexi Hilliard had 10 digs, and senior Hannah Vetterli notched four aces. Murphy added eight digs and three aces. Junior Alicia Kuester posted two blocks.

Monroe (6-21, 0-6 Badger South) has two more matches this week before the WIAA regional action. The Cheesemakers play at Evansville today and then host Portage on Thursday.

"This is our last week of the regular season and we are hoping to come out really strong before heading into regionals," Witt said.

Monroe lost two matches at the Badger South Conference tournament Saturday in Monona.

Madison Edgewood knocked off the Cheesemakers 25-18, 25-15.

"I was happy with their play against Edgewood," Witt said. "They were really scrappy, and Alicia Kuester did a nice job in the middle coming up with some key hits."

Monroe then got a rematch against Oregon, a team they lost to two days before. The Panthers beat the Cheesemakers 25-20, 25-16.

The Cheesemakers battled back and got within two points of the Panthers late in the first set.

"Some serving and ball handling errors kept us from taking the first set," Witt said. "The second set we played kind of flat. I was hoping we would beat Oregon the second go around, but it just wasn't in the cards."

Kuester had a team-high 11 kills in the tournament. Murphy racked up 14 assists, and Neuenschwander had 13 assists. Hilliard racked up 17 digs and notched two aces. Vetterli added eight digs.
