ALBANY - Senior Mitchell Kauk stepped up and delivered against Brodhead to lead the Comets to a 57-49 win Saturday, Nov. 30.
Kauk scored seven of his 15 points in the second quarter with Albany sophomore point guard Tyler Dahl on the bench in foul trouble. It's the first win for Albany (2-0) over Brodhead since 1997.
"They have had our number for years now," Albany coach Derik Doescher said. "I think it was huge win for us. It's been a long time coming. I honored those going into the Albany Hall of Fame. There was a big crowd and everyone was excited."
Dahl picked up two fouls in the first 2 minutes and sat on the bench for the rest of the first half. Albany senior Isaiah Shell scored a game-high 17 points, but struggled shooting.
"That helped keep us in the game," Doescher said. "With Tyler on the bench and Isaiah shooting as poor as I have seen him shoot, we needed that scoring.
"As long as we could keep it close, I wasn't going to put him (Dahl) back in there and have him risk getting his third foul."
Dahl came back in during the second half and had some key steals to lead the Comets, who outscored the Cardinals 34-21 in the second half.
"He's our go-getter," Doescher said of Dahl. "He's our defensive player. He changes the momentum and gets everyone going."
Brodhead (1-1) was led by sophomore Ned Slocum who scored a team-high 16 points and Josiah DeLorme who added 15.
