Comets, Panthers net big wins

ALBANY - The Albany boys basketball team received a big lift off the bench and dug in defensively to hang on to pick up a 47-38 win over Argyle Friday night.

Albany seniors Mike Elmer and Adam Zurfluh combined to score 18 points to lead the Comets. Both Elmer and Zurfluh each scored a team-high nine points to lead the Comets to victory.

Albany coach Derik Doescher said both Elmer and Zurfluh provided a big spark.

"To have your two top scorers off the bench speaks volumes," Doescher said.

Albany (8-9, 4-5) limited the Orioles without a field goal in the second quarter and opened up a 22-14 halftime lead.

In a play that may go down as the play of the year, Argyle sophomore Nate Thomas hit a fullcourt shot at the buzzer of the third quarter on a baseball heave to cut the Comets' lead to 32-28. Albany had a chance to score in the closing seconds, but a pair of tip-ins rimmed out. Thomas grabbed the rebound and threw up a prayer as time expired, banking it in at the other end of the court.

The Comets hit 11-of-18 free throws, but struggled in the fourth quarter, going 4-for-10 from the charity stripe.

Albany senior T.J. Zweifel nailed a clutch 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to give the Comets a seven point lead. Zweifel, Jake Lincicum and Bryce Hulbert all scored seven points in the game.

Argyle (5-11, 4-6) was led by senior Andy Bohlman, who scored a game-high 10 points. Matt Cash added eight points and Kevin Berg chipped in seven for the Orioles.

Juda 56, Pecatonica 41

BLANCHARDVILLE - Juda senior Beau Benner exploded for a game-high 37 points to propel the Panthers to a 56-41 win over Pecatonica.

Juda (5-12, 3-7) outscored the Vikings 19-7 in the first quarter and led 30-16 at halftime.

Juda senior Tyler Pierce added seven points.

Pecatonica junior Jeremy Meudt led the Vikings with a team-high 13 points.

Pecatonica (6-11, 3-8) lost Kaleb Feller, who tweaked his ankle. Feller had also been battling through an MCL sprain. He scored nine points, but didn't play in the second half.

New Glarus 69, Waterloo 43

NEW GLARUS - New Glarus senior Logan Lockard caught fire, scoring a game-high 25 points, as the Glarner Knights broke a school record with 14 3-pointers and cruised to a 69-43 win over Waterloo.

Lockard drilled seven of the Knights' 3s. New Glarus (13-3, 5-2 Capitol South) outscored Waterloo 19-11 in the first quarter and led 35-28 at halftime. The Knights had a nine-point lead heading into the fourth quarter and put the game away with a 21-4 surge in the final period.

"Logan had the hot hand," New Glarus coach Travis Sysko said. "The guys did a good job of finding him when he was open. We have struggled offensively the last couple of games. We got back to the basics this week. It paid off tonight for us."

New Glarus senior Jeremy Langfoss scored 11 points, Matt Felt and junior Cameron Jeglum added seven points each.

Barneveld 47, Black Hawk 45

BARNEVELD - The Eagles outscored Black Hawk 18-12 in the decisive fourth quarter to come back and win 47-45 over the Warriors.

Black Hawk (10-8, 5-5 Six Rivers East) led 33-29 heading into the fourth quarter.

Barneveld's Logan Johnson carried the Eagles down the stretch, scoring 18 of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors shot just 8-of-14 from the free throw line.

Black Hawk was paced by senior Payton Schliem who scored a team-high 15 points. Junior T.J. Adams scored 13 points and senior Michael Place added seven.

Darlington 49, Riverdale 34

RIVERDALE - Alex Erickson and Ethan Pickett combined for 34 points to lift the Redbirds to a 49-34 victory over Riverdale.

Darlington (9-9, 6-6 SWAL) raced out to a 12-7 lead and led led 23-19 at halftime.

The Redbirds limited Riverdale to just 13 second half points.

Erickson scored 21 points and Pickett added 13.
