Comets, Orioles score wins

BLANCHARDVILLE - The Pecatonica Vikings grabbed a Game One victory over Albany, but the Comets dominated after that, winning in four games, 23-25, 25-11, 25-6, 25-8 Thursday in Six Rivers East conference action.

Senior Sydney Bump exploded for 18 kills, 13 digs, and nine aces to lead the Comets. Senior Courtney Pfeuti had 34 assists and senior Kaitlyn Schulz had 14 kills, 13 digs, and three blocks to help the Comets stay undefeated at 10-0.

Pecatonica's Ellie Gifford, a senior, had six kills, junior Michala Boese handed out six assists, and junior Allison Swenson tracked down eight digs to lead the Vikings.

"We came out of the gate playing solid defense and we might've caught Albany by surprise," said Pecatonica head coach Cher Schliem. "But after that, we just didn't have an answer for what they were doing. I was very proud of the composure our players had."

The Vikings will compete in the Darlington Invitational on Saturday, then travel to Monticello Tuesday. Albany will host Juda Tuesday.

Argyle 3, Monticello 0

ARGYLE - The Argyle Orioles evened their conference record at 5-5 after a three game sweep of the Monticello Ponies Thursday, 25-22, 25-18, 25-14.

Junior Micala Peterson paced the Orioles with eight kills, 17 digs, and four aces. Sophomore Kayla Ostby also played a big role for the Orioles with 22 assists and two blocks.

Monticello got four kills each from senior Taylor Klitzke, and juniors Karlie Klossner and Desiree Marty. Junior C.J. Dilley added 11 assists for the Ponies.

Argyle will participate in Saturday's Darlington Invitational, then travel to Black Hawk Tuesday. Monticello will host Pecatonica Tuesday.

Black Hawk 3, Barneveld 0

BARNEVELD - After a two-point win in game one, the Warriors completed a three-game sweep with a convincing 26-24, 25-14, 25-14 victory over the Barneveld Eagles Thursday.

Senior Melissa Wellnitz put down 11 kills and senior Alyssa Pieffer distributed 12 assists to power the Warriors. Senior Rachel Rygh added four aces for Black Hawk (8-2 Six Rivers East).

Black Hawk will play in the Beloit Turner Invitational Saturday, then finish the Six Rivers conference schedule Tuesday at home against Argyle.

Orfordville Parkview 3, Brodhead 0

ORFORDVILLE - Freshman Carly Mohns led the Cardinals with seven kills and senior Mariah Mohns had four kills, but Brodhead fell in three games to Orfordville Parkview, 25-18, 25-19, 25-12 in a Rock Valley South conference match Thursday.

Sophomore Taylor Douglas provided a spark for Brodhead with six assists, seven digs, and a block. Sophomore Amanda Pickel added a pair of aces for the Cardinals (4-5).

Brodhead will host Palmyra-Eagle Tuesday to close out the regular season before facing an undetermined opponent in the WIAA regional quarterfinals Tuesday October 19. The seeding meetings will be held this weekend.
