BURLINGTON - Albany's hopes of a boys basketball regional championship were dashed Thursday, getting trounced by Burlington Catholic Central 58-35.
"(Burlington) shot well from the get go, and we didn't," Albany head coach Derik Doescher said.
Catholic Central led 21-6 after the first quarter, and the second quarter wasn't much better.
"We had a lot of good looks early on, but we couldn't get them to fall. Then the frustration mounted and we dug ourselves into a really deep hole," Doescher said.
Albany would wind up trailing at halftime, 39-9.
"I challenged my kids at halftime to come out and play as well as they could. I told them to keep their heads up," Doescher said.
"Granted, Burlington had a lot of their reserves in the game in the second half, resting their starters for Saturday, but I was pleased with how our kids played."
Albany outscored Catholic Central 26-18 in the second half. Tyler Bauman scored 13 points and Bryce Hulbert had 11 for Albany. The Comets finished with three 3-pointers and were 6-for-8 from the free throw line.
"We came in knowing that we had nothing to lose. I am just so proud of these guys. From where we were at in midseason, we came a long way, and that's a credit to them," Doescher said.
