MONROE - When the leadoff batter gets on base, there is a good chance your team is going to score. The Monroe Cheesemakers found themselves with plenty of chances to score, but couldn't come up with a clutch hit in a 3-0 loss to the Baraboo Thunderbirds in a Badger Conference crossover game Tuesday.
Monroe got the leadoff batter aboard in each of the first four innings and loaded the bases in the fifth inning, but couldn't push across a run against Baraboo's Jessie Carrigan. The Cheesemakers managed only three hits, but got extra baserunners with five walks, two hit batters and two errors. Monroe also put the ball in play with their bats by striking out only three times against Carrigan, but the lack of two-out hits came back to haunt them.
"It's not like we were overpowered, we're just not playing with confidence," said Monroe head coach Dale Buvid. "We had the right kids up, but we just didn't get it done."
The Thunderbirds got seven hits off Monroe's Kristin McArdle with five of them going for extra bases including a home run by Brienne Schwarz in the third inning.
"Kristin pitched out of some jams and kept us in the game," Buvid said.
McArdle went all seven innings, struck out five and walked five.
The Cheesemakers' three hits came off the bats of seniors Abby Kennison, Gwen Sutter, and Kendell Niffenegger.
Monroe (4-12, 3-3 Badger South) will host Madison Edgewood Thursday in Badger South conference action.
