MONROE - The second of three summer tennis tournaments, the City Doubles Tournament, sponsored by the Monroe Parks and Recreation Department, will be July 19-20.

The tournament is open to anyone. Every team will be guaranteed two matches, with a consolation side in each bracket. The tournament will have a men's Class A with a championship flight; men's Class B for intermediate teams; women's Class A, also featuring a championship flight; women's Class B for intermediate teams; and a 14-and-under bracket for the youth teams.

The entry fee is $20 per team for high school age or older, and $10 for the youth teams. The 14-and-under and women's brackets will kick off play at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 19, at Recreation Park, followed by the men's brackets at 12:30 p.m. The tournament will conclude Sunday afternoon.

"We put a lot of emphasis on doubles," tournament director Jim Bartholf said. "That is my favorite part of tennis. It's a faster game. It's for people who like action."

Last year's men's doubles champions were Dan Bartholf and Joe Soddy.

Bartholf said doubles is not as taxing on the body as singles can be.

"You have a partner," Bartholf said. "You have to work together as a team."

Bartholf said it's a lot more common for two average singles players with great chemistry to spring an upset in doubles.

The deadline to enter is noon on Friday, July 18. To register, call tournament director Jim Bartholf at 325-9402.
