BRODHEAD - Walworth Big Foot outside hitter Gloria Esarco had a match-high 20 kills and the Chiefs swept the season series from Brodhead, knocking off the Cardinals in four sets in a Rock Valley South clash on Thursday.
"Big Foot came ready to play," Brodhead coach Erin Kammerer said. "Their outside hitters were playing dominant. They were tough to dig. We spent a lot of time on defense."
Brodhead (15-10, 6-2 Rock Valley South) led the first set 24-22, but couldn't slam the door on the Chiefs. The Chiefs came back to win the first set 26-24. Big Foot then pulled out a 25-20 win in the second set, but Brodhead captured the third set 26-24. The Chiefs used two big serving runs to roll to a 25-14 win in the fourth set.
With the win, Big Foot has a two-match lead over the Cardinals for the conference championship.
"We bounced back from the first set," Kammerer said. "We just couldn't seem to figure out the rotation. We have to learn from this and get better. I was looking for them to fight for every single point, and they did that. We hoped to get better on serve receive and that happened."
Brodhead senior Kylie Moe had a team-best 17 kills and 16 digs. Senior teammate Amber Pickel had 10 kills and three blocks. Brodhead freshman Abbey Johnson racked up 37 assists and Brooke Malcook notched five aces.
Juda 3, Pecatonica 2
BLANCHARDVILLE - Pecatonica had two leads late in the fourth set but couldn't close it out against Juda.
Juda junior Sara Jordan had a team-high 15 kills to propel the Panthers to a 20-25, 25-21, 13-25, 25-23, 15-3 win over the Vikings. The Vikings were coming off a five-set win against Barneveld on Tuesday.
Pecatonica (9-5, 5-4 Six Rivers East) had 17-10 and 20-15 leads in the fourth set.
"Mentally, we just got down, and we were not able to come back," Pecatonica coach Tori Leonard said. "I feel like we were playing not to lose. We were afraid to make mistakes."
Juda junior Chelsea Burkhalter added eight kills and had a team-best five aces. Junior Alexis Goecks had a team-high 21 digs, and sophomore MacKenzie Byrne had 11 assists. Jordan also added five aces.
Pecatonica senior Britt Miller had eight kills, four blocks and notched three aces. Junior teammate Liz Tisch racked up 17 assists and senior Clara Moen had a team-high 16 digs.
"We talked about the need for toughness," Leonard said. "It's something we have to overcome."

ARGYLE - Sophomore Ashley Bruehlman had 10 kills, seven aces and 23 digs to lead the Orioles to a 25-20, 25-19, 27-29, 25-18 victory over the Ponies.
Junior Morgan Godfrey added nine kills and three blocks for Argyle (9-4, 6-2 Six Rivers East), and junior Kayla Butler-Paulson had 29 assists and 18 digs.
"Monticello played really good defense," Argyle coach Jen Butler said. "We just kept pushing and fighting through to the end."
Sophomore Alaya Hummel paced the Ponies (2-7 Six Rivers East) with seven kills. Junior Bri Graber had six kills and three aces, junior Jessie Garrison had 24 assists, and junior Brittany Disch had three blocks.
New Glarus 3, Madison Abundant Life 0
NEW GLARUS - Senior Maddie Macht had 10 kills and 13 digs to lead New Glarus to a nonconference sweep.
The Glarner Knights rolled 25-17, 25-14, 25-14.
"It was great to see a nonconference team in the middle of the season," New Glarus coach Kelsey Schmit said. "All of the girls on the team got to play and made a positive impact."
With the win, New Glarus improves to 11-13, 3-4 Capitol South.
