Cheesemakers win Raider Scramble

NEW GLARUS - The Monroe wrestling team crowned four champions en route to winning the Raider Scramble tournament Saturday.

The champions for the Cheesemakers included junior David Andrews at 120 pounds, junior Cole Murray (132), junior Hayden Arneson (195) and senior Traiten Gorr (220).

Monroe edged Evansville-Albany for the title 190-179 in the nine-team tournament. The Cheesemakers won the tournament despite wrestling without senior McKenzy Foley (170) who was out of town.

"It was a little bit of a suprise," Monro coach Tom Witt said. "We are seeing some of the hard work we put in early pay off. I wanted them to keep wrestling hard in the finals and wreste to their ability and they did that. Hopefully, that motiavtes them even more."

Andrews went 5-0 and posted three pins. He defeated Brodhead-Juda's Blake Burns in a nail-biter 8-6 in overtime in the championship match. Murray also went 5-0 and had four pins in the tournament. He defeated Mount Horeb's Tyger Frame 7-3 in the title match.

Two of the Cheesemakers upperweight wrestlers, Arneson (195) and Gorr (220), also both went 5-0. Arneson was dominant posting five pins. Gorr had four pins and defeated Evansville-Albany's Lucius Reinhart 10-3 in the championship match.

Brodhead-Juda's Tyler Hoesly (160) finished first, going 5-0 with three pins. Hoesly edged Mount Horeb's Aquoya Faust 7-6 in the title match. The Cardinals had three wrestlers finish 4-1 to take second including Burns (120), Noah Steinmann (170) and Joe Stout (195). Stout racked up four pins, while Burns and Steinmann each had three pins.

Evansville-Albany had three champions - Chase Katzenmeyer (126), Nolan Kicmol (138) and Jordan Meyer (145).

Sugar River's John Chenoweth (126) took second going 4-1. Chenoweth's only loss was to eventual champion Katzenmeyer who pinned him in 1:16. Chenoweth pinned Brodhead-Juda's Theodore Policastro in 1:06. Sugar River teammate Trent Siegenthaler (195) went 3-2 to take third and Tanner Jelle (182) was fourth. After being pinned by Arneson and Stout, Siegenthaler recorded two pins. He then pinned Dodgeville's Jonathon Geisking in 1:18 in a third-place match.

The third place wrestlers for the Cheesemakers included sophomore Sam Kind (138), sophomore Dempzy Foley (160), junior Isaac Allen (182) and junior Kyle Walter (heavyweight).

Kind took third after Brodhead-Juda's Jeffery Williams had an injury default. Foley pinned Sauk Prairie's Kyle Benish in 1:43 to seal third place. Allen pinned Brodhead-Juda's Logan Ford in 408 seconds to lock up third.

Walter finished the tournament 3-2. After two pins, Dodgeville's Payton Calvert beat him 5-0 and Walter lost a thriller to Cuba City's Aaron McCarthy 2-1. In a third-place match, Walter defeated Evansville-Albany's Brandon Lange 3-0.

Brodhead-Juda's Russell Waeffier finished third (106) and Alex Goebeli (113) was fourth.

Monroe freshman Timmy Anderson (126) went 2-3 and took fourth place.

Monroe freshman Gabe Witt (106) and senior Ian Salzwedel (152) also each took fourth.
