LENA - The Monroe softball team continued to slug its way to wins at the Lena-Winslow tournament Saturday.
Monroe (21-3, 9-1 badger South) smashed Prophetstown-Erie 14-2 in five innings and beat Lena-Winslow 14-1 in six innings.
"Prophetstown is a very good team and state ranked in what would be comparable to our Division 3," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said when comparing them to teams in Wisconsin. "We are very happy with the way we played."
Monroe junior Kari Jordan went 4-for-4 and had three RBI. Senior Chandra McGuire went 3-for-4 with three RBI and senior Kirsten Vetterli drove in two runs. Sophomore Natalie Dillon went 2-for-3 and senior Kayla Updike went 2-for-4.
Dillon pitched five innings and gave up two earned runs on seven hits. She struck out four and walked two.
In the game against Lena-Winslow, the Cheesemakers broke the game open with a seven-run second inning. McGuire crushed a two-run home run and Updike followed with a solo home run to spark the Cheesemakers.
Monroe junior Haley Kaiser went 2-for-2 and senior Taylor O'Leksy was 2-for-4. The Cheesemakers played all 17 players and each got at least two at-bats.
"You are always building toward next year even though we still have some big games this year," Buvid said. "Any time you can get your underclassmen out there and get them some experience it definitely helps."
Monroe has a big Badger South Conference doubleheader showdown against Milton today at 4:30 p.m. at Twining Park. Monroe (9-1 badger South) has a two-game lead on Milton (7-3). If the Cheesemakers can at least split the doubleheader, they would win a conference championship for the second straight year.
