MONROE - Sophomore quarterback Tyler Elmer tossed two touchdowns to lead Monroe to a 28-0 win over Baraboo Friday.

With the win, Monroe improved to 2-0 for the first time in more than 12 years. The game was called with 6 minutes to go in the fourth quarter due to lightning.

"The last time Monroe went 2-0 was probably when coach Pat Martin was here," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "I would have to dig it up in the record book. It feels great."

Martin, a Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Famer, was a former Monroe football coach that led the Cheesemakers to five state championships in the 1980s and 1990s, including three straight state championships 1990-92.

One week after rushing for 241 yards and scoring six touchdowns, the Thunderbirds were keying on stopping Monroe senior Cody Wolf. The Cheesemakers took advantage of an aggressive Thunderbirds' defense by attacking them in the passing game. Elmer threw a 14-yard TD pass to sophomore Alex Tordoff in the second quarter to give the Cheesemakers a 6-0 lead. Elmer then connected with junior Jaron Kuester on a 41-yard TD pass to give the Cheesemakers a 13-0 lead.

"Baraboo really wanted to stop Cody," Miller said. "We had some other kids step up and make plays."

Tordoff kicked a 37-yard field goal in the second quarter to give the Cheesemakers a 16-0 lead at the half. Elmer completed 6 of 8 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Tordoff had two receptions for 65 yards and two touchdowns.

The Cheesemakers forced three turnovers - two fumbles and an interception by senior Desmond Ford.

"It was an excellent defensive performance," Miller said. "Our defense played very sound and aggressive. It was a great thing to get the shutout because Baraboo is a pretty good team."

In the second half, Monroe junior Jacob Kind took a reverse and then tossed a 51-yard TD pass to Tordoff to give the Cheesemakers a 22-0 lead. The last scoring drive was set up by Monroe sophomore Isaac Allen's 60-yard fumble return. That set up Wolf's 1-yard TD plunge to cap the win.

Monroe will open Badger South Conference play at Stoughton Friday, Sept. 5.
