MILTON - Unique circumstances helped set the stage for a record-tying performance Monday.
The Monroe High School girls 800-meter relay team ran in the boys race at a Badger Conference triangular since neither Milton nor Madison Edgewood entered girls relay teams in the event.
Monroe's 800 relay team of senior Isabel Bazley, senior Abby Oudinot, freshman Cammi Ganshert and junior Jordan Hirsbrunner completed the race in a school record-tying time of 1 minute, 46.87 seconds.
"It's always hard to have a meet right after prom," said Monroe girls track coach Matt Davis, referring to the formal dance held Saturday. "They ran better than I thought they would. They are still tired. We were just hoping to practice our handoffs. They were the only girls 800 relay team, and I think it really pushed them running with the boys."
The triangular was not scored.
The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team of junior Josie Eberle, Bazley, Oudinot and Ganshert won in 50.8 seconds, which is the second fastest time in the history of the girls track program.
"Our relays are one of our strongest parts this year," Davis said. "We showed it tonight. Our girls will only get better from here on out."
Monroe junior Casey Rielly won the 100 high hurdles (16.24) and the 300 hurdles (50.78).
Eberle won the pole vault, clearing 8 feet, 6 inches, and sophomore Payton Sigafus placed second with a personal-best 8-0.
Sophomore Sydney Mathiason won the 800 (2:43.64).
Sophomore Rachel Meier won the 1,600 in 5:39, which also was a personal record.
"We are really relying on her (Meier) at conference to score some points," Davis said.
Ganshert won the 100 (12.3) and junior Alicia Kuester took second (12.9).
Kuester won the long jump with a jump of 14-101⁄2, and freshman Faith Koester was second (14-3).
Hirsbrunner took first in the 200 (26.96). Sophomore Mya Waterman won the 400 (1:02.87) and was second in the 200 (28.28).
Freshman Kaylee Schaefer won the 3,200 in 15:02.6.
In the boys meet, Monroe sophomore Jonah Tostrud won the 1,600 (4:44). Senior Thang Lu won the 400 (51.71) and Dillon Storey took second (57.55). The Cheesemakers' 800 relay team of Alex Koller, Kendall Paulson, Brayden Zettle and Anthany Hernandez won the race in 1:37.24. Sophomore teammate Dylan Scace won the 800 (2:04.2), and Koller was second (2:08.2). Teammate Devonte Mayo won the 200 (24.37). Kyle Legler won the 3,200 (10:47.3), and Hunter Wild was second (11:35.1).
Dominick Curtiss, Mitch Keith, Cam Shaw and Lu teamed up to win the 1,600 relay (3:37.7). Keith also won the pole vault (12-6).
Monroe freshman Tyler Montgomery took second in the 100 (11.43) and Trevor Aebly was second in the 110 high hurdles (15.96). Junior teammate Dylan Beaver finished second in the shot put (42-10).
