MONROE - The singles players on the Monroe girls tennis team stepped up and propelled the Cheesemakers to a 6-1 win over Reedsburg in a Badger Conference crossover match on Thursday.
Monroe (1-1) won three of the four singles matches and swept all doubles matches en route to the win.
"It was a good confidence boost for the girls to win the way they did," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "It's motivation for them to continue working to improve."
The dual match came on the heels of two doubles tournaments where singles players were forced to focus on improving their games with a partner at their side.
"The doubles they have played really helped them in singles," Saugstad said. "In doubles you have to be aggressive and the points are a lot quicker. We were able to take advantage of it when our opponent gave us easy shots. It was good to see them carry that over from doubles."
At No. 1 singles, Monroe senior Macayla Quinn defeated Reedsburg's Darci Wafle 6-3, 7-5. At No. 2 singles, Alisa Fager defeated Jackie Anderson 6-1, 6-0. Sarah Wong at No. 4 singles beat Ali Pfaff 6-0, 6-0. Sarah Sabatke at No. 3 singles lost to Reedsburg's Katherine Pfaff 2-6, 4-6.
Fager and Wong earned their first varsity wins.
"Alisa Fager and Sarah Wong played very nice matches," Saugstad said. "Both girls put their opponents on the defensive early and were making them run a lot."
The junior No. 1 doubles duo of Ellie Grossen and Chandra McGuire defeated Trish Greenwood and Emma Greenwood 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Allie Coplien and Chelsea Miller beat Athena Murdock and Larissa Jaech 6-2, 6-3. Erin Gellings and Paige Prien at No. 3 doubles defeated Shelbi Stowers and Carley Suemnicht 6-1, 6-2.
Monroe will play in the Freeport Quad on Saturday along with Freeport, Dixon and Rockford Auburn. The Cheesemakers will host Madison Edgewood on Tuesday, Aug. 28.
"As a team, our energy level was a little down tonight," Saugstad said. "We have a tough stretch of matches coming up in the next few days so we are going to need to bring the energy level up and play a lot of good tennis to get some wins."
