MONONA - The Monroe girls swimming team set several personal records and finished eighth at the Badger South Conference meet on Friday.

"It's really hard when you swim your hearts out, but you only have 11 girls and other teams have so many girls," Monroe coach Linda Moser said. "It's disheartening. They just have to look past that and look at what they do in the pool."

Milton, the No. 1 ranked Division 2 team in the Wisconsin Swimming Coaches Association, won the Badger South Conference 474-452 over Fort Atkinson.

Monroe junior Rachel Root finished second in the 200 individual medley with a PR of 2 minutes, 16.79 seconds and third in the 100 backstroke (1:00.48).

"She was really close to breaking 1 minute again," Moser said.

Root teamed with Cat Weeden, Sarah Kind and Briana Katzenberger to take fifth place in the 200 medley relay with a PR time of 2:02.63.

Weeden finished ninth in the breaststroke with a PR of 1:19.70.

"She just missed getting up on the podium," Moser said of Weeden trying to get into the top eight. "I felt bad for her because she is a senior."

The Cheesemakers' 400 freestyle relay team of Kind, Anika Nelson, Katzenberger and Angie Beaver also finished ninth and just missed the podium.

Beaver set PRs in both the 100 and 200 freestyles. She entered the conference meet seeded 20th in the 100 freestyle, but finished 15th and she swam the 200 freestyle in 2:19.16.

Monroe will now gear up for the Baraboo sectional on Saturday, Nov. 5.
