MONROE - The Monroe girls tennis team remained unbeaten in the Badger South Conference after sweeping Oregon, 7-0 on Thursday.
"There is nothing taken for granted right now," Monroe coach Stephanie Miller said. "Every day they have to come out aggressive and strong."
The Cheesemakers did just that by winning every match. Monroe (7-2, 3-0 Badger South) remains in contention for a conference title with Madison Edgewood and Fort Atkinson.
Monroe junior Kristin McArdle at No. 1 singles defeated Oregon senior April Cook in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, sophomore Ellie Shuda defeated Kathryn McMannes, 6-3, 6-1. Monroe sophomore Lily Priewe at No. 3 singles beat Alyssa Reifert, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 4 singles, Monroe's Alyssa Quinn defeated Lauren Bucheger, 6-1, 6-1.
The Cheesemakers' three doubles teams were sensational winning 36 of the 39 games.
Monroe senior Ashley Hermanson and junior Kelsey Erickson remained unbeaten at No. 1 doubles with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Oregon's Melissa Eyers and Jenna Sanford. Monroe seniors Emily Grossen and Gwen Sutter, playing at No. 2 doubles, defeated Shelby Jacobson and Martha Sommers, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 3 doubles, the Cheesemakers' senior duo of Taylor Weis and McKenzie Bruce beat Oregon's senior tandem of Eva Meyer and Kate Klahn, 6-1, 6-0.
"Right now it's hard because we have so many close doubles players," Miller said. "It could change daily. They are competitive. They want to be playing in the top spots."
Miller doesn't buy the notion that singles players can be more relaxed playing with a strong core of doubles players that challenges each other in practice.
"I think our singles players like to compete," Miller said. "They are not thinking my match doesn't matter because doubles will win."
Before matches against Madison Edgewood and Fort Atkinson, the Cheesemakers have a critical Badger South match at Monona Grove on Tuesday.
"I have always stressed all the conference matches are important," Miller said. "I think Edgewood and Fort will be the teams to beat."
