STOUGHTON - Soccer coach Tony Vasquez doesn't have any concerns about the Monroe boys soccer team's defense after the Cheesemakers posted their third straight shutout this season, a 1-0 victory over Stoughton to open conference play Monday.

Monroe senior Corey Flannery scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on an assist from Oliver Lees at 30 minutes, 45 seconds.

"I thought it would take more than that," Vasquez said. "It was a lot harder game than we imagined it would be. It was a good game for the guys to experience."

Senior goalkeeper Lucas Koch had 12 saves.

Vasquez said he was really happy with the defense.

"We keep rotating guys in and out," he said. "They are playing really well together."

Monroe (3-0, 1-0 Badger South) has outscored its first three opponents 10-0. Vasquez is excited with three straight wins to start the season

"I know the conference is always tough," Vasquez said. "It's a good start. We wanted to get something moving in the right direction."

The Cheesemakers will get a couple of challenges coming up. Monroe will host Sauk Prairie at 5 p.m. Thursday at Honey Creek Park and will play Sugar River in Belleville on Monday.

"We have beat them a couple of times and they beat us last year," Vasquez said of Sauk Prairie. "It's becoming a little bit of a rivalry. They are a good team that is always well coached."
