MILTON - The Monroe boys tennis team swept every singles match en route to defeating Milton 6-1 Wednesday.

It was a good confidence building win for them," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "This long stretch with a ton of matches is finally over and we'll get to put in a lot of practice time in the next two weeks. It's nice feeling going into these practices with a win and being above .500 in the conference."

With the win, Monroe improves to 7-4, 3-2 Badger South. The Cheesemakers have played eight matches the last two weeks.

Monroe senior David Shon at No. 1 singles defeated Milton junior Jackson Van Den Heuvel 6-4, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Monroe sophomore Silas Setterstrom defeated Milton senior Jacob Stricker 6-2, 6-2. Monroe senior Zach Hendrickson at No. 3 singles beat Milton's Jordan Shore 6-1, 6-0 and senior teammate Rhett Katzenberger at No. 4 singles defeated Milton's Chriss Hanna 6-2, 6-0.

"Rhett Katz-enberger and Zach Hendrickson wasted no time getting wins," Saugstad said. "They came out on the court ready. They moved their feet, hit their shots and thoroughly controlled their matches tonight."

Setterstrom improved his record to 8-6 with the win. Setterstrom had to adjust to Stricker hitting the ball with some unique spin.

"I liked seeing Silas putting some balls away at the net tonight," Saugstad said. "It's an important win for him to keep working on that aspect of his game."

With the win, Shon also improved his record to 8-6 this season.

"He (Shon) just wasn't quite on his game," Saugstad said. "Last year, when David wasn't on, he didn't win very much so it was nice seeing David get a win without his best stuff."

The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team of seniors Kevin Noriega and Matt Monahan defeated the Red Hawks' Chet Adams and Bobby Hanna 6-4, 6-4. At No. 2 doubles, the Cheesemakers' Jeremy Miller and Kody Althaus beat Milton's Robby Boden and Neil Garcia 6-1, 6-3.

"These guys know how to control the momentum in a doubles match and keep their opponents down," Saugstad said of Miller and Althaus who improved to 9-5.

Saugstad said Noriega and Monahan were sluggish, but did enough to win and improved to 9-4 this year.

"They've been sluggish on the court as of late and we need to get them out of that because they have the goal of getting to state and winning some matches there," Saugstad said.

Monroe will play at the Stoughton Invitational Saturday. Six of the seven teams in the invite are in the Badger South Conference or the Cheesemakers' subsectional.

"Every match is going to carry with it some major seeding implications," Saugstad said.
