MONROE - Milton outscored Monroe in only the second Cheesemakers meet at home this season, 95-75.
"The score never shows what really happens at the meet," Monroe head coach Linda Moser said. "It doesn't tell about all of the time the swimmers shave off. It doesn't show the determination and persistence of these girls."
Monroe had a few winners. Randi Robertson won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:29.78 (her best by five seconds), Kendell Niffenegger won the 50 freestyle in :31.17 and the 200 freestyle relay finished ahead of all others in 2:06.52. Leanna Schwartzlow, Veronica Andraski, Niffenegger and Roberston made up both the 200 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay (2:18.97) teams.
"I am very proud of what the girls did in the water tonight," Moser said.
Robertson scored a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:17.35) and a third place in the 200 medley relay. Schwartzlow finished second in the 200 individual medley (2:42.43) and the 500 freestyle (5:08.33), the latter an event she doesn't normally swim. Niffenegger took third in the 100 butterfly (1:19.42).
Sara Heitkamp finished second in the 100 freestyle (1:08.90) and third in the 400 freestyle relay. Britney Johnson took third in the 50 free (32.13) and 100 breaststroke (1:34.30). Paige Hoesly took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:33.08). Katie Coplien, Jessica Moehn, Elizabeth Eiseman and Heitkamp finished third in the 400 freestyle relay (4:52.10), which despite the finish shaved 11 seconds off their best time.
Nichole Lattin shaved time off both her 200 and 400 free races. Jolene DeNure took off nine seconds total in the 200 free and 100 back. First-year swimmer Kate Coplien took two seconds off her 100 free.
Moser said that just because the Cheesemakers aren't the strongest or deepest in the conference doesn't mean that they aren't competitive or having a good season.
"Swimming isn't just about placing first; it is about improvement and reaching deep inside to gut out that race to achieve a personal best," Moser said. "That's what keeps these girls going in a very competitive conference."
The junior varsity team tied the Red Hawks 69-69.
Monroe next races at Stoughton on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
