DEFOREST - After nearly three months, the Cheesemakers showed head coach Pat Murphy what he's been waiting to see.
Monroe was that "half step quicker" Murphy preaches and buried DeForest with a 27-4 second quarter for an easy 66-34 nonconference victory Saturday night.
Mitch Tordoff scored nine of his 18 points - all on 3-pointers - during a run that saw the Cheesemakers fail to score on only one of their second quarter possessions. Tony Cates added seven points in the second quarter and finished the game with 16. Senior Brett Stangel had 11 points to give Monroe its third straight game with three players in double figures.
"Our guys came out with a good purpose," Murphy said. "We knew hat we wanted to do offensively and defensively."
The Cheesemakers (15-0 overall) gave their Badger North counterparts fits on the defensive end, forcing the Norskies (9-7) into 14 turnovers, four on consecutive possessions to open the game.
"It was business as usual, but we did it just a little bit quicker," Murphy said.
Murphy was excited to see the Cheesemakers get a victory over the weekend as the coach is trying to instill a winning attitude on Saturdays.
"Our regional final, sectional finals and state are on (Saturdays)," Murphy said. "Those Saturday games can be lethargic."
Murphy's club gets back to work in regular-season action when they travel to McFarland Thursday, leading up to next Tuesday's rematch with Verona in Monroe.
