FORT ATKINSON - Senior Hogan Edwards pitched a one-hit shutout to lead the Monroe High School baseball team to a 5-0 win over Fort Atkinson on Thursday.

Edwards struck out 11 and walked one to help the Cheesemakers (2-6, 1-3 Badger South) snap a six-game losing streak.

"His velocity was very good, and his curveball was pretty pinpoint," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said of Edwards. "It was what we are hoping for out of Hogan. He was in control the whole game."

The Cheesemakers broke the game open with a four-run second inning. Freshman Nick Bansley walked and stole second. Senior Cole Murray, who went 2-for-2 with one RBI, reached on a bunt single. A throwing error on the play allowed Bansley to score. Junior Hunter Ward laid down a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Dagon Rach, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI, then delivered an RBI single to center to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead. Freshman Jared Dillon reached on an error and senior Carter Sawdey reached on a fielder's choice. Senior Jacob Ritschard then reached on an error that scored both Dillon and Sawdey to give the Cheesemakers a 4-0 lead.

Huffman was excited to see the Cheesemakers come through with six hits and put the ball in play more.

"It's a good confidence builder," Huffman said. "We've been close some of these games. It's a step in the right direction. We can still get better offensively."
