MONROE - Coach Brian Jensen said his Monroe golf team couldn't wait to play its season-opening dual match Tuesday in spite of the chilly air and gusting winds.

"They were excited to get out there," Jensen said. "I don't think (the conditions) bothered them too much."

Senior Kyle Bruce fired a team-best 38 and the Cheesemakers defeated Stoughton 165-168 in a Badger South Conference dual meet at Monroe Country Club.

Eric Timm carded a 41, Caleb Pagel a 42 and Matt Miller a 44 for the Cheesemakers.

"All in all, we had some pretty good scoring," Jensen said. "We just need to eliminate our big numbers.

"What's holding us back from playing really well is individuals having high holes."

Bruce, for example, was 3-over par on his first hole, then played just one over par for the other eight holes in less-than-ideal conditions.

"He had a lost ball right away, but he bounced back," Jensen said of Bruce. "He held it together and played well."

Jensen said Miller, a freshman, was solid, too.

"He was 7-over on two holes. You take that out, and that's a pretty good effort for his first varsity match," Jensen said.

"Being able to pull off a win is definitely a good confidence booster."

Stoughton's Henry Klongland had the low score with a 37.
