MONROE - The Monroe girls tennis team proved to be the class of the Janesville Craig subsectional Monday afternoon.
The Cheesemakers qualified two singles players and top two doubles teams for the Lake Geneva-Badger sectional on Thursday. The sectional qualifiers included sophomore Kristin McArdle at No. 1 singles, Kiera Berger at No. 3 singles, the No. 1 doubles team of seniors Pam Lehman and Melissa Hill as well as the No. 2 doubles team of juniors Ashley Hermanson and Gwen Sutter.
"They went out and played strong," Monroe coach Stephanie Miller said. "They were on today. Our No. 1 and 2 doubles teams have a chance to go to state."
McArdle qualified for the sectional for the second straight year by defeating Lake Geneva-Badger's Kayla Sheldon, 6-0, 6-1.
Lehman and Hill entered the subsectional as the No. 1 seed and breezed by Burlington's Liz Hammitt and Laura Ehlen, 6-1, 6-0 to lock up a sectional berth. Both McArdle and the No. 1 doubles team are one sectional match win from qualifying for state.
Hermanson and Sutter, who also received a No. 1 seed at No. 2 doubles, won two matches. They defeated Kathryn Steffen and Emily Greening of Burlington, 6-1, 6-1 and Janesville Parker's Kim Amundson and Danielle Boyd, 6-1, 6-2.
Berger defeated Lindsay Matherne of Badger, 6-0, 6-2 and Burlington's Maddy Endle, 6-1, 6-3.
In No. 3 doubles play, Kelsey Erickson and Taylor Weis won their first match and then lost a three-set match to Janesville Craig, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
Miller said Janesville Craig stayed at the back baseline and lobbed the entire match.
"It's a different style of play then you are used to," Miller said. "They had to work for their points. They should be proud of themselves."
McKenzie Bruce at No. 2 singles and Emily Grossen each lost first-round matches. Janesville Parker's Emily Sodemann defeated Bruce, 6-0, 6-1. Janesville Craig's Kelly Collins defeated Grossen, 6-1, 6-1.
