BARABOO - Walks and hit batters came back to haunt the Monroe High School baseball team in a 3-2 nonconference loss to Baraboo on Tuesday.
Monroe senior pitcher Brad Ripp pitched 52⁄3 innings and gave up three unearned runs on four hits. He walked eight batters and hit five.
"He was working the inside part of the plate, and it just got away from him," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman. "Thirteen base runners on walks and hit batters, we can't have that with that many base runners. It's something we have to work on and work through. When the other team is crowding the plate we have to be able to throw strikes on the outer half."
Monroe senior Cole Murray went 2-for-3 and senior Carter Sawdey was 2-for-4.
Monroe (3-9) scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead. Sawdey led off with a single. Senior Jacob Ritschard moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Sawdey later scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 1. Senior Isaac Allen walked and stole second. Murray came through with a single. Allen later scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch to give the Cheesemakers a 2-1 lead.
The Thunderbirds scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the win.
