MONROE - With Monroe track coach Curt Miller using the Simpson Relays as a tune-up for a Badger South triple dual at Monona Grove Tuesday, he had to love what he saw Thursday night.

The Monroe girls tied Stoughton for second (65) place, while the boys team was third (64). Sun Prairie won both the boys and girls team titles. The Cardinal girls racked up 100 points and the boys edged Monona Grove 96.5-94.

"We are just trying to see some things," Miller said. "We were not just trying to score the most points. This is one of those meets that is preparing us for next Tuesday. That is what we are using this for."

The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team of Maria Eberle, Lauren Werth, Brenna Bazley and Jaclyn Ditter won with a time of 51.96 seconds, which was one second ahead of Sun Prairie.

"I was very happy with it," Bazley said. "Sun Prairie and Sauk Prairie are some hard teams to beat. I'm just glad we have something to show for all the hard work we have put in this season."

Bazley ran on the state qualifying 800 relay team last year. She has a couple of goals in mind for this season.

"I want to get 49.7 because that means we would be on the school record board and I want to win conference," Bazley said of the 400 relay.

The Cheesemakers' 800-meter relay team finished second with a time of 1:53.97. The Cheesemakers added second place finishes in the hurdle shuttle (:53.73) and the shot put, with a combined distance of 94-3 1/2. Monroe senior Jess Leu had the top throw in the shot put (34-11 1/2).

"We have a lot of depth with girls in the 200," Miller said referring to the 800 relay. "We have eight girls who are quality 200 runners and Jaclyn and Brenna Bazley didn't event run it. They still ran awfully fast."

The Cheesemakers took third in the distance medley (14:20.25) and third in the long jump (44-11 3/4). Ditter had the top long jump of16-6.

The Monroe boys track team received a first place from its 1,600 relay team. The Cheesemakers' 1,600 medley relay team of Jon Becker, Caleb Ahrens, Matt Bush and Dylan Starck won the race with a time of 3 minutes, 42.68 seconds. The Cheesemakers added a first in the high jump with a combined height of 17-10. Monroe senior Michael Barrett cleared 6-4 and freshman Jake Hirsbrunner made 6-2.

"This is a fun meet where you get to run with different guys you usually don't run with," Starck said. "I would say this is a tune-up meet."

Starck ran a solid anchor leg to run away with first place.

"The guys just went out and gave me a lead and I wasn't going to let anyone pass," Starck said.

The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team took second (8:34.13) and the 1,600 relay team also finished second (3:38.22). Monroe also took second in the long jump with a combined distance of 54-9. Ethan Schuttler led the Cheesemakers with a jump of 18-4 3/4.

Monroe finished third in the distance medley (11:49.75). The Cheesemakers finished third in the pole vault (31-0) and third in the shot put (118-1 1/2). Monroe senior Jeffrey Hill cleared 11-0 in the pole vault and Alex Beaver led the Cheesemakers in the shot put (41-3 1/2).

Senior Nick Walker didn't compete in the meet.

"We are just giving him a day off to keep him fresh," Miller said.

If Monroe's boys track team is going to win a third straight Badger South title, then Tuesday's triple dual at Monona Grove against, Milton and Madison Edgewood, is critical. The Cheesemakers were conference co-champions with Monona Grove last year.

"MG is always a team we circle on our calendar," Starck said. "They are a team a lot like us. They are coached and run like us."
